I have a friend who runs rivers. He’s an oarsman and every summer is out on the Rogue, or the Snake or the Colorado; out somewhere running white water and navigating currents. Sometimes, people fall out of river boats. I did, a lot, in Costa Rica rafting on the Pacuare. [...]

25 years ago this coming May, I and a few hundred others walked across the stage at the Spokane Opera House and received our diplomas. We had done it. We had graduated from Whitworth College and were about to launch into the next chapter in our lives.

Mom is doing great. Last night, I got here about 8:15 or so, and Mom and Gail were waiting up for me. Mom was in her wheelchair watching TV. After the hugs and kisses, we sat down to visit. After a few minutes, Mom says she can wheel herself. So she does. [...]

Some days I don’t remember Dad is gone. I laugh, play, work, complain, sleep, eat and dream all without remembering. Then out of nowhere, the dad-shaped hole in my being opens up and swallows my breath. It knocks me back, pushing tears into my eyes and dizzying uncertainty into my heart. I don’t much like it.
