Driving from Tel Aviv, we head south on Highway 40, leaving Tel Aviv about 8:00 am. It’s Saturday and the country is quiet. It’s Shabbat. The elevators are automatically stopping at every floor and the toaster has been removed from the breakfast buffet.

Rockets are landing 25 miles south of Tel Aviv. Protesters less than an hour from here are throwing rocks, burning flags and threatening the third Intifada. Mike and I are in a hotel room, figuring out what to do next.

Winter has finally arrived. It’s 65F/18C outside and the clouds have rolled in creating a light-gray haze and filling the city with the tangy smell of the sea.
